Book One of THE FINAL BREATH CHRONICLES, the exciting new series by V.B. Marlowe

Naomi has a terrible habit of interfering with Death—an unforgivable flaw for a Grim.

In order to complete her tasks, she must live among Humans for weeks at a time. When Naomi is assigned a job at Jefferson High, she quickly becomes attached to the kids she’s been assigned to watch over. Knowing that her new friends are going die under less than ideal circumstances, she has the opportunity to prevent their deaths from occurring. Only one big problem, interfering with death is the worst crime a Grim can commit. If she intervenes, she’ll put herself and her family in danger. Naomi must make the hardest choice she’s ever had to make, go against the sacred covenant or watch her new friends walk blindly to their deaths. Naomi must maneuver her way around traitors, life-changing secrets, and a nasty rebellion brewing back at home.

Naomi Grim The Final Breath Chronicles Book One eBook VB Marlowe

This book had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t wait to see what Naomi was going to do, poor thing. Did she make the right choice?

Naomi Grim is an excellent book taking a unique and gripping twist on the life of a grim. Naomi immediately captures your heart with her humanity and compassion. Learning of how she must live her life, and the internal conflict that ensues, tears at your heartstrings leaving you rooting for her all the way.

Author Tiffany Nicole Smith has brought to life this entire new world where grims live their semi-normal lives waiting for assignments to add years to their own lives while collecting the dying person’s lifestone. These grims are sent out beginning at the age of 13. Young Naomi is only 16. She starts to feel connected to these humans and finds conflict in watching them die and collecting their stones. She has no choice. She was born a grim and must do a grim’s job or she will eventually die. If she tries to save a human that could risk her entire family.

I highly recommend this book! Tiffany Nicole Smith is an outstanding storyteller who has captured my imagination and took it for an exhilarating ride.

Naomi Grim The Final Breath Chronicles Book One eBook VB Marlowe Reviews

Review of NAOMI GRIM by V. B. Marlowe

NAOMI GRIM is an immensely absorbing novel, and I would like to see it expand into a series. Naomi, the Protagonist, is something else—quite literally. She and her family (parents, older brother, younger brother) live in a seriously Dystopian, very hierarchically-rigid Society, controlled by a Tyrant. As Grims, they are tasked to collect “lifestones,” the emission caused whenever a Human dies. These are not Souls, but Life Force. Grims collect these to add years to their lives, according to how many years the Human would have hd remaining. At the top of the Grim food chain is the tyrant Dunningham, a man who evicted his own older twin brother for mating with a Human. Yet Dunningham's rules are the kind “Do as I say, not as I do.” Naomi's father wants very much to move up in Society from their Farrington community to the high-class Upper Estates, and sees the opportunity when Dunningham assigns Naomi and her two brothers, Bram and Dorian, to collect Lifestones from a soon-to-occur high school mass massacre. Naomi's problem, in Grim perspective, is that she gets too emotionally involved, and sympathises with Humans. Eventually, she makes her decision, and the consequences are uproarious.

I literally could not stop reading this book, from the first pages, I was so engrossed. Naomi is a wonderful Protagonist, and the world-building (actually four different Societies in the Grim dimension, Nowhere) is masterfully created and very believable.

I reviewed a digital copy generously provided by the author, at no cost, obligation, or remuneration. I opted to review this novel.
Disappointing....I normally love stories like this. Underdog heroine changing society unique take on the grim reaper etc..., but their are many plot holes which detract from the story.

Spoilers
1. Naomi is a likable heroine because she has compassion. No other grim in her family has that emotion. Therefore when Naomi is in trouble why would they help her at all. Based on everything we learn about her family they would turn her in, but they do not....does not make sense based on how the author portrayed the characters in the story.

Her father simply wants power....he would have killed her himself.
Her brother is a punk and would have laughed as they tortured her - removed all of her years.
Her so called best friend would have simply just shaken her head and moved on with her life.
No one would have helped her....possibly her mother, but not enough interaction to determine.
The Foragers - rebels - have no interest in her misguided views in fact one tries to kill her to stop her from saving the school. They view humans just the same which doesn't make sense since their leader supposedly fell in love with one. (no reason to rebel - if they are simply the same)

2. The human kids she meets at school....there is no where near enough interaction between her and them. The author did not take time to develop their friendship between her human friends and her. No real conversations, just the very beginnings of being an acquaintance and for this we expect Naomi to turn her back on her entire society....perhaps she is just that good and self sacrificing, but I couldn't help, but feel that her human friends were throw away characters to advance the plot.

Overall, a missed opportunity here.....sorry but this story needs to be rewritten.
I thought this book was really good and if you are into mysteries and action then you should read it.
I really enjoyed reading this story and look forward to reading the second book in the series. Can't wait to see what happens to Naomi Grim.
My first thought was, "Is this another 'Hunger Games'?" But Naomi Grimm, while capturing the essence of a heroine intent on helping her family and friends escape an oppressive monarchy, the protagonist has a darkness and depth that other young adult novels shy away from. You will not be disappointed if you give Tiffany Smith's book a try. And you will definitely yearn for more Darkness. I've already downloaded Part 2.
Drama, drama, drams.. Feelings when not allowed, teenage angst. . Brothers with agendas, bosses with agendas... I just couldn't get my head into this book at all, and the cover seemed more adult like than the book was for sure
This was a fun book with interesting characters, and I enjoyed the world-building and the overall plot. There were a few things I found unlikely, such physical characteristics that Naomi didn't discover about herself until she was an adult. I'm being purposely vague to avoid spoilers. This is the second book I've read by this author, and she does a great job of creating characters and plots that pull you into the story and keep you reading. The ending leaves you hanging a bit, hoping you'll go on to the sequel, and I think most readers will be interested enough to continue the series.
